I just took a break from writing to walk along the beach. On my way there I passed a little flower stand with freshly picked daffodils in a variety of containers. There’s a metal box padlocked inside with a slit on top. That’s it. It’s totally on the honor system. I dropped 5 bucks in and selected a few flowers. Then I thought, “There’s a special place in hell for people that steal from this stand….”
Then I got to thinking, what a great coffee table book idea! Photos of all the wrongdoings in the world with the simple phrase…
“There’s a special place in hell for….
– people who tag (graffiti) historic places
– people who don’t turn their cell phones off in church
How would YOU finish that sentence…..

Bank executives who take huge bonuses (after getting help from the government) because they ripped off all their customers!!

Amen Heather! And Jonathan, maybe that’s what it will take for people to switch!

Thinking financial services (since I’m reading your blog), I think there’s a special place in hell for businesspeople who take prey on those who have the fewest options. I’m thinking of the payday loan people who make bad financial situations worse, or the Western Unions of the world who charge silly amounts of money for sending foreign workers’ remittances home.

David,
Nicely done. That is a fiery room where LIndsay Lohan movies play 24/7.

First 5 things that come to mind for me:
There’s a special place in Hell for…
1) The person who came up with the idea to put impossible-to-remove stickers on CD cases
2) Parents who yell at Little League umpires
3) Teachers who give up on students who desperately need them
4) Squirrels
5) Cemetery vandals

…. people who dwell on the negative… why not name your coffee table book… “There’s a special place in heaven for…….”
example.. gardeners who trust that there is more good in the world than bad and sell their flowers and produce on the honor system.

Charles,
Thank you for this contribution. I”m going through my tortured writer phase this week so I guess it didn’t occur to me to see it that way. How about this. There’s a special place in heaven for Cindy at Pop’s in Gearhart who still bakes her grandmother’s scone recipe each morning and fills them with lemon curd. Oh, and special ed. teachers – like my lovely niece Leslie.

Credit union executives who think only of the bottom line…

thank you Glenn! That’s the chapter I just completed. There are plenty of CEOs to learn from these days like Kerry Killinger, Akio Toyoda and of course, Bernie the monster Madoff. As in, I made-off with all of your life’s savings.

The ancient thought that discrimination is only about the color of skin. The CEO of an institution that will continue to bury their head in the sand while they are missing out on huge opportunities, but instead they will reprimand and discipline staffers attempting to be pro-active. There are times when I am afraid of the future of credit unions. There is a special place down there for people who are not aware. There is also a place in the courtroom for them, too…sometimes.
Peace out.

Thank you for that. I also think there’s a special place in hell for CEOs with retirement countdown calendars on their desk and no succession plan.

There’s a special place in hell for the file cabinets.
I have always said “In hell…all you do is file all day.”
I can’t think of a more horrifying punishment for all eternity.
