What if you had $0 dollars in your marketing budget this year? How would you spend it?
Chris Tissue, Industry Analyst for Callahan & Associates, Inc. published an article last week that showed the sharp decline in educational and promotional expenses among credit unions. The average decrease 11.4% from 4Q 2008 to 4Q 2009, with the largest credit unions cutting back the most.
Every credit union in the US started with a marketing budget of zero. Zilch. Nada. And for years they thrived by focusing those resources on building member loyalty. They built loyalty by listening to members’ needs, responding with relevant products, and recommending solutions. The members in turn bought more from the credit union and told their co-workers and family members about the co-op.
Several years ago, Diana Dykstra decided to return to those old school methods. She is the CEO of San Francisco Fire Credit Union. When she first became CEO the credit union had changed their name to SFFCU and expanded to a community based charter. This angered the loyal firefighters and their families. They felt somewhat betrayed. So, she decided to switch it back to San Francisco Fire and really crank up loyalty among them.
Her boldest, bravest decision was to refund all ATM surcharges. You see, they only own a couple of ATMs and even though they participate in the Co-Op and Shared Branch networks they knew that members hated being charged to get their money. So when it happened – poof – charges reimbursed.
Did this cost them money? Absolutely. But guess what? It’s the number one reason cited on Yelp! that people feel love and loyalty towards the credit union.
She also does some “old school” things like giving little Snickers bars to members when they come in and she pays for their parking. I guess you could classify this as marketing dollars. And probably the most expensive thing she does – she personally responds to emails from her members. If you go to her website you’ll see the Ask Diana link on the main page. Several members on Yelp! reviews credited this unselfish act as the reason for their loyalty.
Diana won’t use her loyal members’ money to woo in complete strangers with membership bribes that promise free iPods. She doesn’t have to.
Instead, 64 members have voluntarily taken the time to review her credit union on Yelp!. She has earned the highest rating – 5 stars. The next closest credit union in her area is Patelco Credit Union with 24 reviews and 3.5 stars.
You simply can’t buy this kind of love.

Another cool thing that SF Fire CU does?
Product reviews on their website. Very few CUs do that and I wish they would.

What about cool pens that make noise? Or water bottles? Surely items such as these are the behind-the-scenes secret to her success. Don’t buy into the whole “treat people well” bit. People don’t want to be respected, they really just want fridge magnets. 🙂

JG – You are so right. Oprah taught us that people just like to get together and get free stuff!
I am a bit of a tchotchke nut – I could spend tons of money on that stuff.

Wow… what a brave and CU thinking lady. I hope my boss doesn’t read this. I need the job. I’m a fan of tchotchkes (I hope you spelled that correctly, Denise), but I agree in this day of slimy ad promises and pretend caring her jesture hits honesty and transparency on the head.

Very powerful stuff here Denise. This is the very idea behind CU*SWAG. With marketing budgets getting cut, a high gloss ad won’t drive new members in. But… if you put them in a t-shirt that looks good, feels good and has a fun pro credit union image, members for sure will talk up the credit union when asked about their shirt.
I know of one credit union who spent $10,000 on a 20 page 4 color brochure for their Gen Y market. WTF?!? That’s more like a book. Dollars could have been much better spent in other ways IMHO.

What an inspiration! Thanks for sharing this story, Denise. May we all strive to market more like Diana.
And, I agree with all of you…tchotchkes are nice. Who doesn’t love a good chip clip or memo cube? 😉

@Deb – does your credit union have chip clips? I love those! I’m a pen whore too.
In fact, I loved the Portland Teachers Credit Union pens and when they changed their name to OnPoint (yuk) I knew those pens would change. So I went into their main branch, grabbed the entire cup-full and “helped them out” by depleting their inventory.
I have a few in safe keeping in case they become collectors items some day.

@Denise – Oh yea! We’ve got lots of chip clip magnets! You can use them to close your bag of chips, OR use them to hang your chips on your fridge! LOL!
And, folks love our pens! If you send me your contact info (dschaffer@directionscu.org), I’ll send you a chip clip AND a pen to add to your collection. (Don’t you feel like you’ve just won the lottery?!)

As the person who orders and distributes tchotchkes at my credit union, I can tell that it’s more expensive and time consuming than many people think. One relatively small order of swag can end up being a thousand dollars or more and will disappear within minutes at our branches.
One of our branches goes through about 500 chapsticks every two weeks. I honestly don’t know where the stuff goes!
I don’t have a problem with giving away pens though, and lollipops/treats are an awesome idea because those are consumed and don’t end up in landfills. I also like the t-shirt idea — will have to look into that.
Funny that you mention the magnetic clips because that’s my personal fave as well!

Terrell,
I swear I only took one chapstick! But I use it every day and it’s running low. I don’t think I have a Verity Chip Clip! We are charter Velocity Checking account members. That should count for something! LOL.
You should definitely check out CU Swag – they have some great t-shirts. Maybe you could tie into Verity Mom somehow?
